I have been involved with this business since the early 80's when I had my own appliance repair business and did service work for other companies. The standard practice was to release the "freon" to the atmosphere. We now know that wasn't the right thing to do. The 1990 Clean Air Act was the start of recycling refrigerants for the industry and even though controversial it changed the habits of the everyday person for the better of the environment.
